Trots en Troost (Pride and Solace) - medieval books of hours and their readers. Little books full of fervent prayers and breathtaking miniatures; books of hours were more precious than jewels to people of medieval times. They served as a powerful tool to ward off calamity and disease and to prepare a favourable fate in the afterlife. Today, they offer us an intimate look into the desires and fears of our ancestors.
But there is more: why did influential ladies and gentlemen commission portraits of themselves with a book of hours by masters such as Petrus Christus or Hans Memling? What did this reveal about their identity, status and ambitions? This collection presentation invites you to look beyond the glittering gold leaf and vibrant miniatures. Immerse yourself in a world of hope, intentions and image and discover the deeper meaning of these medieval bestsellers.

Throwing Muses (re-scheduled show). American alt-rock icons Throwing Muses are widely regarded as one of the best college rock bands of the ‘80s and ‘90s. Formed by Kristin Hersh and her high school friends, the band released 'University' (1995), a landmark album that charted and built a devoted fanbase that has followed Hersh for decades. Founding member Tanya Donelly left after the band’s early years to join The Breeders and start her own project, Belly, but always maintained a close relationship with the group.
After signing to a major label, Hersh quickly realized she had no interest in the corporate world or the greed of the music industry. She used her first solo album, 'Hips and Makers', as a bargaining chip for complete artistic freedom. Throwing Muses later signed with independent label Fire Records, releasing a string of albums throughout the 2000s that stand shoulder to shoulder with their early classics.
With Kristin Hersh’s idiosyncratic vocals, raw, emotive guitar work, and dynamic songwriting, Throwing Muses remains a powerhouse of the alt-rock era - one that still holds its own against successive generations of guitar-driven music. Hersh’s uncompromising independence kept the band just outside the mainstream, granting them a cult status and artistic freedom that remains rare in today’s music industry.
For the first time since 2011, Throwing Muses return to Europe—now a trio led by Kristin Hersh. The Moonlight Concessions Tour will be accompanied by a new single and serves as a retrospective of 40 years of American rock history. Tickets: €24-31. 8 Sep, 19:30. Cactus Muziekcentrum, Bargeweg, 10.
