Trots en Troost (Pride and Solace) - medieval books of hours and their readers.
Little books full of fervent prayers and breathtaking miniatures; books of hours were more precious than jewels to people of medieval times. They served as a powerful tool to ward off calamity and disease and to prepare a favourable fate in the afterlife. Today, they offer us an intimate look into the desires and fears of our ancestors.
But there is more: why did influential ladies and gentlemen commission portraits of themselves with a book of hours by masters such as Petrus Christus or Hans Memling? What did this reveal about their identity, status and ambitions? This collection presentation invites you to look beyond the glittering gold leaf and vibrant miniatures. Immerse yourself in a world of hope, intentions and image and discover the deeper meaning of these medieval bestsellers.
The exhibition "Trots & Troost" gathers never-before-shown medieval books of hours, paintings, and objects from the collections of the Public Library, Musea Brugge, the Jean van Caloen Foundation, and the Flemish Government. Tickets: €15 (FREE for Brugge residents). Until 7 Oct. Groenigemuseum, Dijver 12.

🍻🎶 Bruges After Dark: Nightlife
mclusky + No Prisoners. The Welsh post-hardcore legends mclusky delivered three unhinged albums before calling it quits: 'My Pain and Sadness is More Sad and Painful Than Yours' (2000), the Steve Albini-produced 'mclusky Do Dallas' (2002), and 'The Difference Between Me and You Is That I'm Not on Fire' (2004). Part of the band continued as the excellent Future of the Left, but for the most part, the many fans they amassed during their short existence had to make do with memories and replays of standout tracks like 'Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues' and 'To Hell with Good Intentions'.
Starting in 2015, the band began to sporadically play shows again with original members Andrew Falkous (vocals/guitar) and Matthew Harding (drums), joined by Damien Sayell (bass). First as mclusky*, later under their original name, and eventually in 2023 with their first new music in 19 years – the 'Unpopular Parts of a Pig' EP.
Now the full-fledged mclusky comeback is real, and the band has announced a first full-length album with their new lineup. Anyone who saw them at Leffingeleuren – their first show on Belgian soil – knows what to expect: sardonic lyrics, rabid guitars, and a thunderous rhythm section. Not to be missed!
No Prisoners. With members of Kapitan Korsakov, Raketkanon and – yes indeed – Alex Verdi & De Spinazis in the ranks, the noise rock trio No Prisoners consists solely of talented noise makers. Their ‘high energy low cost medium rare falafel punk rock’ includes top-notch hammering, abrasive guitar riffs and cutting vocals. Partly Hüsker Dü, partly Buzzcocks and partly Meshuggah, resulting in a concrete mixer you’ll gladly stick your head into. Their debut album ’13 songs for good luck’ is out now, but make sure to catch them live. Tickets: €18-25. 4 Oct, 19:30. Cactusmuziekcentrum, Bargeweg, 10.
