September opens with one of the loveliest events in the Bruges calendar — an arts festival on the water itself — and the new season stirring into life.
🌊 Reiefestival — Friday 4 to Sunday 6 September, on and around the canals. The city's triennial arts festival returns for its second edition, transforming the reien (canals) and their banks into a living stage. Under the theme Stroom (Flow), the programme brings eight performances — including five world premieres — of theatre, dance, concerts, installations and participatory work to atmospheric waterside locations across the historic centre, including the Coupure, the Langerei and the Adornes estate, with Salon and Hof Arents as the festival hub. reiefestival.be.
🍺 Brugs Bierfestival — next weekend, Sat 12 & Sun 13 September, BMCC (Beursplein). Reiefestival installations & performances on the water — 4–6 September, various canal-side locations. Beyond the ticketed shows, the festival's installations and outdoor moments make simply wandering the reien a treat this weekend. Highlights include Ferry Tales, a theatrical boat trip along the Langerei where reality and fiction blur, and Portrait Under Water by Laurent Delom in the garden of the Gezellehuis. A quiet week in the concert halls otherwise, as the new season warms up. The Concertgebouw launches its 2026/27 programme — themed Wijzertijd, a meditation on time and wisdom — later in September; well worth booking ahead at concertgebouw.be. ⚽ Football. It's a FIFA international break this week, so the Jupiler Pro League pauses and there are no club fixtures at Jan Breydel. Belgium are in World Cup qualifying action — check kick-off times and coverage locally. Champions Club Brugge return to league action after the break, with their next home match at Jan Breydel against Antwerp on Sunday 13 September (see next week's edition). HoT Summer Bar — final Friday, 4 September, House of Time. The last of the season's summer bars to close holds its final Friday of the year this week — a relaxed, green, waterside spot between the historic warehouses at the edge of the city, with a kitchen garden and beehives. A mild, changeable start to September — classic maritime autumn weather, so pack a light waterproof. Thursday is the warmest and brightest day, reaching around 22°C with sunny spells. Friday turns wetter, with moderate rain (heaviest in the morning) and highs around 19–20°C — worth bearing in mind for the Reiefestival's opening evening, though the after-dark shows are largely sheltered. Saturday sees lighter, patchy showers clearing, around 19°C — fine for the Sint-Michielsfoor and the festival with a brolly to hand. The rest of the week settles into the usual early-autumn mix of sun, cloud and the occasional shower, with highs of 18–21°C and cooler nights around 12–14°C.
